Jazz Composer - Pianist - Organist - Arranger

Biography

Born UK 1980). Following a Bmus and Mmus in composition, Nick studied Jazz at the Guildhall School of Music. He is in demand as a musician throughout London and the South-East for his versatility and sensitivity to a wide variety of contexts. He performs on piano, keyboards and is also a versatile performer on Hammond organ and trumpet.

Not content with jazz alone, he has used his training as a composer to try and find ways in which improvisation and composition can work together. He has composed and performed in classical, orchestral, bigband, film soundtracks, ethnic music, free improvisation and prog-rock contexts. This willingness to explore as many idioms as possible means that he can often be found following unexpected avenues in pursuit of creative direction.

Regardless of context, his music is underpinned by an obsession with forms, his pieces take on a shape of their own, often standing out through his control of large-scale developmental structures. Asides from writing music for jazz ensembles, He has a piano concerto, choral, orchestral and chamber works to his credit. Some of these can be seen / heard here.

He was the winner of the 2005 Leeds Jazz Composer's Competition, and a finalist in the 2006 Brussels's Jazz Orchestra International Composer's Competition. His music was recently featured as part of the 2005 BSO South-West Composer's Weekend. His scores have been performed by the Guildhall Jazz Ensemble, Conservatoires' UK Bigband, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. His film music continues to receive regular broadcasts on a number of channels, and has been selected for performance at festivals including the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. He holds awards for composition and outstanding performance from the 1999 National Festival of Music for Youth.
